MILAN, Italy, May 19 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here on Tuesday that China and Italy should explore new areas of cooperation as they face major opportunities in addressing the grim challenges of the international financial crisis.     Wu is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) who has visited Italy since 1997.He arrived in Milan on Monday evening for an official goodwill visit. He expressed appreciation of China's active response to the financial crisis, saying that China's development is encouraging and provides fresh air to the world.     Formiconi said the Lombard Region is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in such fields as economy, technology, energy efficiency, environment protection, education and tourism. He welcomes more and more Chinese companies to invest in the region.     On the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, Wu said the event is a new bright spot in China-Italy cooperation. Noting that the Shanghai World Expo is yet another global event in China after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Wu said the Chinese government and the local government of Shanghai have received assistance from Italy and other members of the international community in preparing for the event.     Wu expressed the belief that the Shanghai World Expo will leave a wonderful record on the history of the event.     Milan has won the bid to host the 2015 World Expo. It has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Shanghai on staging the World Expo.     Wu hopes that the two sides could utilize this platform to expand exchanges and cooperation so as to add new vigor to China-Italy relations.     Formiconi expressed the willingness to actively participate in the Shanghai World Expo, which he regards as an important area of cooperation between the two sides. He hopes to learn the experience of Shanghai in hosting the World Expo.

L'AQUILA, Italy, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo on Wednesday called for more cooperation among the five leading developing countries (G5) to address international challenges.     Dai listed four aspects for further cooperation and coordination among the G5 when he, on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao, addressed the leaders' meeting of China, India, Brazil, South Africa and Mexico on Wednesday afternoon in the earthquake-stricken Italian city of L'Aquila.     According to a press release issued by the Chinese delegation, Dai said the G5 should join hands to cope with the international financial crisis.     Dai proposed that the G5 countries make join efforts to enhance the regulation of global financial system.     he urged the G5 countries to actively address the challenges of climate change and cooperate on addressing non-traditional security threats.     The Chinese state councilor also reiterated the importance of the unity of the G5, calling for continuing cooperation on a wide range of global issues.

BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature Monday began to review the first draft law on diplomatic personnel which intended to standardize management of diplomats in foreign countries and international organizations and improve their well-beings.     The draft, submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the ninth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) for a first reading, said the government should establish a floating mechanism to raise the diplomats' wages and other benefits.     China has about 5,000 diplomats serving in more than 250 embassies, consulates general and other overseas organizations who were sent by 32 domestic agencies of the central government.     The draft law will be the first of its kind written to regulate Chinese government agents working in the 171 countries that China so far has diplomatic ties with.     If a diplomat's spouse works for the government, a public institution, a state-run enterprise or is an active-duty military member and decides to move abroad with the diplomatic staffer, he or she could not be dismissed or face any charges from their employer, it said.     The draft only applies to overseas employees with diplomatic rank, not translators, messengers, chefs, drivers and other noncommissioned staff.     It also mandates that diplomats intending to marry must have their prospective spouses vetted, and that divorces must be promptly reported.     If a diplomatic spouse acquires a foreign nationality or permanent residence permit, the diplomat will be called back before the overseas tenure ends, the draft said.     Diplomats' domestic agencies would also have the power to decide if the spouse could accompany them abroad or whether those who remain in China would have government-paid visits to the diplomats.

SHENZHEN, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Chen Yunlin, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Saturday that the ARATS will offer more support to help Taiwan businessmen weather through the financial crisis.     Chen said this at a symposium here Saturday on the development of Taiwan companies amid the financial crisis.     According to the Taipei World Trade Center, the second purchase delegation from the mainland had shown intention to purchase more than 600 million U.S. dollars worth of goods from Taiwan companies in the coming 12 months during a weeklong visit to the island, mainly involving food, drinks, garments and daily necessities.     "Under the current circumstances, we should positively seek more cooperation opportunities to overcome the hardships," said Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     The mainland will send the third procurement delegation to the island in August, focusing on the island's chemical industry, electronic products and automobiles.     More than 50 representatives from the mainland-based Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Taiwan-based "Chinese National Federation of Industries" and other organizations attended the symposium, which was jointly held by the ARATS and the SEF.

HELSINKI, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China and Finland on Thursday agreed to push for closer economic cooperation to tackle the ongoing global financial crisis.     Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang unveiled broad measures to work together with Finland to fight the global financial crisis after meeting with Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen. BEIJING, May 3 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales climbed 9 percent from a year ago to about 12 billion yuan (1.76 billion U.S. dollars) during the three-day May Day holiday, the Ministry of Commerce said Sunday.     The estimate was based on sales from May 1 to May 3 at 1,000 major domestic retailers monitored by the ministry.     The ministry said robust sales were reported for gold, jewelry, home appliances and autos, as retailers launched promotion campaigns.     Sales of gold and other jewelry rose 19.6 percent, the ministry said, without giving specific figures.     However, it said the Beijing Caishikou Department Store, a major gold retailer in the capital, saw its sales nearly double to 14.3 million yuan on May 1 alone.     Sales of appliances, such as LCD TVs, air conditioners, refrigerators and lap-tops, increased 11.4 percent, while those of automobiles grew 9.2 percent.

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- China's national college entrance exam saw a decrease in candidates for the first time in the past seven years, said the Ministry of Education Tuesday.     About 10.2 million people registered to attend the upcoming exam, down 3.8 percent year on year, according to the ministry.     In contrast, candidates for the exam saw a continuous increase from 2002 to 2008, jumping from 5.27 million in 2002 to 10.5 million in 2008.     This year's examinees would have more opportunities to enter colleges as they would compete for 6.29 million seats in China's universities and colleges, up four percent from last year, the ministry's figure showed.     About half of the country's provinces and regions earlier reported a decrease in candidate number. Some media reports came to the conclusion that greater employment pressure caused by the international economic downturn led to the drop.     "I don't agree with this view," said Jiang Gang, deputy director of the ministry's college students office.     "The drop of candidate number is mainly due to the decline of senior high school graduates," he said.     Jiang, however, admitted the financial crisis did inflict great pressure the country's job market.     In China, most of the candidates for higher education are students finishing three-year study in senior high schools.     Figures from the National Bureau of Statistics showed the number of senior high school graduates decreased from 8.49 million last year to 8.34 million this year. It is estimated to be 8.03 million in 2010.     College graduates are having a hard time finding jobs this year as posts are being axed due to the economic slowdown.     China has 6.11 million college students due to graduate this year, and one million from last year are still looking for jobs, according to the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.     Known as "gao kao" in Chinese, the national college entrance exam, which falls on June 7 to 9 each year, is the largest examination in the world. The exam can change the candidates' lives in a fiercely competitive society.
